Riding For Wheels Project

Help us raise $150,000 in 6100km

Updated: 20th May 2009

Sponsor AllTrails and our cyclists as we cycle the Australian Outback to raise $150,000 for wheelchairs for people living with multiple sclerosis

We are trying to raise as much money as we can for this great cause to help care for people living with Multiple Sclerosis. Help us in our cause to raise $150,000 to provide 10 wheelchairs to people living with multiple sclerosis.

MS Australia has an urgent need to assist a number of people with MS who are under 55, in a high care nursing home, without access to an electric wheelchair.

Mobility and social inclusion

There an estimated 18,000 people with MS in Australia. Our programs extend from funding clinical research, education, respite to in home carer support. A typical diagnosis of MS will occur when you’re 30 years of age and there is no cure. Within 10 years of diagnosis 80% of all people with MS will slip out of the work force and over 20% of people with MS will be classified as paraplegics or quadriplegics.

MS is not only a neurological disease, attacking the spinal cord and brain, it is also one of social isolation and financial hardship.

This is particularly pressing for those people under 55 in high care nursing homes (mostly to serve Aged Care), but are not eligible to My Future My Choice Funding (<50yo in nursing care) and were moved to a nursing home prior to a funding application for mobility aids. Once in a nursing home you can not get funding (if you are over 50) for mobility aids.

These chairs are not cheap, typically costing $15,000 per chair. We need your help to address the financial and social impact of MS.
