Highlights

There will be no hiding it, so we might as well sing it aloud from the rooftops, that this could possibly be THE BEST CYCLE TOUR EVER designed!

Whoever said that cycle touring needed a theme was obviously sensory deprived – the wind in the hair, the sights to behold, the scents that abound as we experience the great outdoors. But a food & wine indulgence tour? That takes the experience to a whole new level.

Each day on this tour will bring another layer of luxury and indulgence as you explore the world-famous wine regions of the Clare Valley, Barossa Valley, Adelaide Hills and McLaren Vale. There will be tours and activities to nourish mind and soul, chef designed degustation experiences, sommelier matched wines, outstanding accommodation; the best of everything in this spectacular pocket of Australia, nay THE WORLD!

This tour is perfect for aficionados of exceptional food & wine and for those mortals among us (hello) who would like to get in on the ground floor to learn what all the fuss is about.

On top of all this, we’re going to throw in a cycle tour for free! By riding the inspiring vistas of South Australia’s ‘God’s Country’, you’ve got a tour with just the right balance of pleasure and pain (i.e. a lot of pleasure and not much pain).

At 61km/day this tour is perfect for cyclists who want to challenge themselves while also enjoying the many delights that come after cycling is finished for the day.

You’ll be looked after by the specialist in Australian multi-day bike tours who will make your cycling holiday a breeze, and you’ll share it all with a small group of like-minded people. Come on your own, as a couple, or in a small group. Welcome to the South Australian Food & Wine Indulgence Tour.

ebike welcome

A typical day on the ride: You wake up energised and excited to explore as you step out onto the balcony to greet the day before heading to meet the rest of the group for a wholesome bike rider’s breakfast.

A morning ride of 30-40km will take you through to morning tea where you re-group with your fellow cyclists and chat about the sights you’ve seen, the things you’ve passed by and what is coming up later in the day.  You take off after morning tea as the AllTrails team pack up and one vehicle will drive further up the road to arrange lunch. Another vehicle sweeps the group to make sure nobody requires mechanical help or maybe just needs a lift up a hill. Lunch may be set up as a picnic by a river, in a local bakery in a small town that we are passing through or could be at the end of your ride day at a restaurant or winery.

The last leg of the day takes you through more lovely scenery and spectacular cycling while the AllTrails support vehicle is never far away with water refills, bananas, home-baked goodies and advice on the best places to go and the best places to stop.

You will arrive at your overnight accommodation with time to explore another interesting town, enjoy the afternoon with a cuppa & biscuit, and will quite often provide the opportunity for a visit to a local winery. Later on we share a few stories at the evening briefing followed by a delicious dinner, then it’s off to bed for a well-deserved slumber so that we can do it all again tomorrow.

Meal and accom inclusions noted as B, L, D, A (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, Accommodation)

Bus transfer Adelaide to Clare (optional) -- NA -- Tue 30 Oct 2018 -- - - D A

Today we will take a bus transfer from Adelaide Airport to our beautiful Country Club accommodation in the Clare Valley (approx 2.5hrs). We suggest arriving by 11am if you are planning to catch our bus which will leave around noon. Upon arrival in Clare we will set up bikes, run through the safety briefing and welcome everyone to what is going to be a great few days exploring some beautiful food & wine regions. Tonight, we will have our welcome dinner before heading to bed in eager anticipation of the first ride day tomorrow.

Clare to Riverton (overnight Clare) -- 47km -- Wed 31 Oct 2018 -- B L D A
Staying two nights in Clare means we don’t have to pack our bags today (winner, winner)! Our route today is along the Riesling and Rattler Rail Trails. This provides a rare opportunity for a leisurely opening pace. There is no rush today as we cruise this beautifully constructed hard-packed gravel surface which is suitable for road bikes if exercising due care and caution (i.e. slow down, let some air out of the high pressure tyres, take it easy and enjoy the sights). Following the former railway, we are afforded ever-changing views of vineyards, mixed farms, natural bushland and world-renowned wine regions. There are wooded sections that feel like English laneways and embankments that give sweeping views of villages and the hills. Along the way there are picnic spots and storyboards about the history and landscape of the region. It’s a great way to start the tour, away from a busy and dangerous highway, with no traffic or cars to worry about and so much to take in.

Riverton has no large motels so we will leave our bikes locked up in the local hall and utilise the bus ride back to our accommodation in Clare as an opportunity to experience more of the beautiful Clare Valley. On the way, we will visit and lunch at Mintaro Maze, visit historic Martindale Hall, then taste just some of the local wines and produce as we call into a select choice of Clare Valley wineries. Back at Clare you will have time for a shower and look around town before meeting up at a local nosherie who promise an evening of relaxed regional dining where food and wine are matched in a mix of shared and individual courses for the whole table.

Riverton to Tanunda -- 76km -- Thu 1 Nov 2018 -- B L D A
This morning, after a hearty breakfast, we will head back to Riverton to collect our bikes and embark on the next leg of the journey. We will leave the Clare Valley Region behind as we head towards the heart of the Barossa Valley. Our route takes us through transition country as we visit Tarlee and Kapunda before reaching Angaston, one of South Australia’s oldest towns, renowned for its lovely vibrant and friendly village (as well as its food and wine). Here we meet the ‘Barossa Trail’, a 40km sealed bike path traversing the length of the Barossa (to Gawler) of which today we will ride the 6km section to Tanunda (via Penfolds Winery in Nuriootpa).

After a shower and freshen up at our stylish and centrally located accommodation, we have a superb late lunch booked at Jacobs Creek (which includes a vineyard tour and tutored wine tasting and education). With what’s left of the afternoon, ensure you work off lunch by exploring the township before another culinary tour highlight tonight. Our dinner hosts are passionate about anything that is Barossan produce; carefully selecting ingredients incorporating three essential elements; fresh, seasonal, local. Naturally, this multi-course meal is matched with world renowned Barossan wines.

Tanunda to Hahndorf -- 75km -- Fri 2 Nov 2018 -- B L D A
Today begins after breakfast by continuing along a beautiful 14km stretch of the “Barossa Trail” as we wind through and around wineries, up and down small rolling hills before descending into the township of Lyndoch. Back on the road, we begin the climb into the Adelaide Hills. It’s not extreme but over the next 40km there is definitely more ups than downs. We lunch in Birdwood, home of “The National Motor Museum” which we will visit before continuing our journey. Just after Mt Torrens we have not only reached the high point of the ride, but we swap the “from here-in, busy road” for the much safer ‘Amy Gillett Bikeway’ – a 17km sealed bike path with gentle descent to our destination at Hahndorf (except for that one little hill before you arrive). The path is a lovely way to finish the day’s cycling.

Hahndorf is Australia’s oldest surviving German settlement and has truly embraced its heritage as it bursts with every German cliché that one could imagine. The architecture, atmosphere and multitude of old fashioned sweet shops, chocolate shops, cuckoo clock shops and strudel bakeries will give you plenty of options for gifts for loved ones at home. It’s very touristy, but very fun so put on your lederhosen, order a bratwurst and sway along with the oompah band as you taste one of the great German beers (including many fine non-alcoholic beers if you would prefer)!

This afternoon we visit the ‘Bird in Hand’ Winery to sample one of the Adelaide Hills finest. “The Bird experience” allows you to take a relaxed seat in their barrel hall while a “Bird in Hand” expert guides you through an intimate tasting of premium wines.

This evening, strap yourself down for another great meal as we inspect the offerings from one of the most well respected fine dining restaurants in the Adelaide Hills. Your only decision: more of the regions exceptional wine or, if still slapping your lederhosen, German beer?

Hahndorf to McLaren Vale -- 45km -- Sat 3 Nov 2018 -- B L D A
After a wonderful breakfast at ‘The Haus’ this morning we head south to Meadows before turning west and dropping out of the Adelaide Hills to McLaren Vale where wineries abound on both sides of the road.

Once at McLaren Vale we will settle in to our final accommodation – yet another multi award winning, high quality establishment in a great location – “Your Country Home Amongst the Vineyards”. Here you can relax around the pool, make use of the gym & sauna, walk through the gardens, or just kick back in your lovely room. This afternoon we will enjoy a “Tasting of the Senses” at Hugh Hamilton Wines, the must-see winery of McLaren Vale with a unique cellar door perched on a hill giving 270-degree views of the vineyard and coast.

Tonight, we celebrate together in traditional style in a rustic, family run, Italiano vineyard. Nothing fancy here and you’ll love it! Think checked red & white tablecloths, basket weaved bottles, smell of roasted garlic, Nonna’s tiramisu. Wholesome, simple, salt of the earth cuisine accompanied by Signore Mitolo’s finest. Ahhh, the simple things in life.

McLaren Vale bus to Adelaide (optional) -- NA -- Sun 4 Nov 2018 -- B - - -

What a tour! This morning after breakfast we will be running a bus back to Adelaide Airport (we suggest booking flights after 12 noon). Thank you for joining us on this unique opportunity to see, enjoy, immerse and indulge yourself in so much of the great food, drink, accommodation, landscapes and cycling that the South Australian Winery regions have to offer.

We are happy to answer any other questions you may have

Feel free to contact us at any time through our website ‘Contact Us’ page, phone or email. We love what we do and want to get you on the best bike ride for you. Speak to us about what’s on your mind and we’ll help you make your decision.

Support bus availability

Our support bus is there to support the tour and also pick up riders who need to jump in for any reason. This vehicle can be quite popular on some days – especially long days or days with big hills! There is no shame in riding in this bus so if you are considering a tour but are not 100% sure if you will be up to it on the toughest day(s), just go for it – our vehicle and staff will be there to help out. It’s better to give it a try than to miss out all together. The bus is also sometimes used for part-time riders who only ride certain sections of each day – these are often partners of someone else on the ride.

Insurance – IMPORTANT

Obtaining appropriate insurance is your (very important) responsibility

IMPORTANT (even if you live in Australia): Travel Insurance for lost deposits and cancellations:
http://www.chubbtravelinsurance.com.au/
Domestic travel insurance usually costs $50-$60 for one week. You can access Chubb Travel Insurance through the above link.

  • They offer an ‘Adventure Sports Pack’ add-on which covers ‘expedition bicycle touring’.
  • They offer three levels of cover where a cyclist can match their ‘Cancellation’ $ limit (seen under ‘Key Benefits’) with the value of their AllTrails tour plus any other flights, hotels etc.

You can also speak to your local travel agent or airline to obtain Travel Insurance. We cannot emphasise enough how important this is. Every year, many clients cancel their tour with us due to unforeseen circumstances – injury, health, or other. Those with no travel insurance can end up with a major financial loss as a result of cancellation fees (make sure this is not you). Those with travel insurance can often claim the expenses back (make sure this is you). As a small business we need to adhere to our cancellation policies. No matter where you obtain your travel insurance from – just make sure that you have it.

IMPORTANT: Cyclist insurance for accidents & medical:
https://www.bicyclenetwork.com.au/membership/
https://bq.org.au/join-us/member-benefits/
This is also very strongly recommended. Cycling can be a dangerous activity and you must be prepared for the worst. You may have an accident in training for the ride, on the ride itself, or cycling down to the corner store. If you are a cyclist coming on our tour you should be 100% prepared for the unexpected. Cyclist insurance can be bought separately, or it comes with cycling memberships such as Bicycle Network or Bicycle Queensland. If you are involved in a crash or collision they can support you with personal injury costs, loss of income, third party liability insurance, assistance in completing your claim paper work & free legal consultation.

Bike type and rail trail riding surface (SA Wineries)

The primary riding surface for the tour is sealed roads, however day one (which is a very leisurely day) has a rail trail section of smooth, hard-packed gravel. Given that the rest of the tour is fully sealed we believe that the tour is best suited to road bikes, however hybrids are also fine.

Bike mechanical assistance provided

A staff member with good bike mechanical knowledge will be part of our crew and will have a stand pump for different valves. The mechanic will often be able to help you with a safety check, general tips and advice about your bike and its upkeep, as well as fixing mechanical problems. We will have limited parts available for replacement which will be charged at shop prices. Labour is free for the first fifteen minutes, there after costs may be incurred at the mechanic’s discretion.  Cyclists with rare or different bikes are asked to contact us at AllTrails as parts can often be very difficult to obtain.

Sharing rooms – how does it work?

On the online entry form you can nominate any travelling companions that you would like to share a room with and/or be accommodated close to so that couples or friends can be grouped together. This can be in a double bed or in twin beds. If you are travelling alone like many of our riders, Single Supplement is available for those who would like their own room for the whole trip. On some tours you can also choose to ‘twin share’ where single riders are paired with other riders of the same gender and changed at each accommodation to create interest in sharing rooms. On other tours you may need to put your name down on a Twin Share Request List and we will try to match you up. If you are a snorer or have other habits that may affect your fellow room-mates we suggest booking your own room. If you are coming on your own and have booked in as twin share, this usually means that you will share a room with one other single twin share traveller, however in some cases we may have larger rooms (eg. two bedroom apartment or a B&B/house with multiple bathrooms) where we may have 3 or 4 single twin share travellers together.

Accommodation on our rides

We always try to obtain great accommodation in the best location for you to rest your weary head (and legs) in each town whether it be a motel, hotel, cabins or similar, usually 3, 3½, 4 star. We choose the best and most welcoming motel for cyclists and our tour group needs. On occasion we travel through some very small towns where accommodation is extremely limited. If for whatever reason, such as limited options, the accommodation one night is below normal standard, we strive to improve this with an extra good room the next night or nights following.

Carrying personal items on the bike

We suggest you carry a spare tube, a full water bottle and your own personal goods such as camera, wallet and rain gear if it’s threatening, on your bike with you. We transport your luggage, day packs, food & extra water. A detailed list of what is required and provided will be sent to you in your pre-tour info pack.

Meals and food

Always a big part of any cycling holiday! Check tour details for meal inclusions on your ride. Our emphasis is on fresh food and balanced diet with plenty of carbohydrates, proteins, fruit and vegies catering for a cycling holiday. We successfully cater to most dietary requirements, however feel free to contact us with any questions. Most meals are included as part of our tours, however you may be required to purchase some meals. See the ‘Day to Day’ tab for more details, or click the ‘Download Itinerary’ button.

Non-riding partners and part-time cyclists

We realise that often our riders want to spend their holidays with loved ones who may not be as keen on the bike as they are themselves – we are happy to accommodate those non-riding partners and part-time riders who want to only ride part of each day, or only certain days. We will generally try to allocate pickup points along the route every day. The entry price will be the same for non-riders and part-time riders.

Safety

We have a great safety record, but accidents can happen. We have comprehensive First-Aid Kits with trained 1st aiders as tour guides and drivers, mobiles and a satellite phone for emergency calls and the locality of hospitals in the areas that we travel through. We also have vehicles that can take anyone injured or sick for further treatment. You can also help by immediately stopping or slowing on-coming traffic if a fellow cyclist does have a fall. Safety discussions are held throughout the tour as part of the daily briefings.

Speak to a past client

We will be happy to give you the names and telephone numbers of people who have participated in the ride or a similar ride to the one which you are considering. Where possible we will provide you with the details of someone within your city or state.
Another good place to look is our ‘Testimonials’ page.

Group info session

Contact us if you would like to find out about booking an info session for your group of friends, or if you would like to find out about a travel talk happening near you in the future. Be inspired, hear from the experts, learn more about a destination and even book your tour on the night.

Weather

Our tours have been specifically scheduled to take into consideration the best time of year to travel to that destination. This takes into account the temperate range, possible rainfall and the prevailing winds. Of course, we can’t ever control the weather however this only adds to the adventure and excitement of your travel experience!
For more specific weather and climate information visit www.bom.gov.au or for our international tours visit www.worldweather.org

Changing or cancelling a tour

We highly recommend that you purchase travel insurance for all our Australian rides at the time of deposit and ensure that it includes coverage for cancellation fees if for some reason you are not able to travel. For our international tours we require all participants to have Travel Insurance to assist you in the event of a medical emergency, lost baggage, personal liability, cancelled tour or any other trip related issues.
Should you wish to change your booking with AllTrails to a different tour, there will be a very reasonable service charge. We try to keep this figure as low as possible to allow flexibility where we can as we want to make sure that you get on the right tour for you. For cancellation and refund policies for your tour click the ‘T&Cs’ tab on the relevant tour page of our website.

What sorts of people join our rides?

People from all parts of Australia and overseas.  Ages generally range from 30 – 70 with the average age about 50 years old. Adventurous cyclists usually about 40% women & 60% men with a mix of singles, friends and couples.

Packing tips

We recommend you bring a soft bag or backpack. We advise against bringing a suitcase as they are bulky, difficult to stow on board vehicles or trailers and heavy. You may be required to lift or carry your own luggage from time to time, e.g. into accommodation. We expect your bag to be no heavier than 15kg, making it easy to manage for you and the staff. Any excess luggage may need to be stored or forwarded on to your final destination at your own expense. Information about what to pack is included as part of your Pre-Departure information. Generally we advise that you pack as light as possible.

Bike Hire

We do not have a fleet of our own hire bikes however we can usually help you out with organising bike hire through our local contacts near our office in Melbourne, or closer to a ride departure location. When you make your booking just let us know that you would also like to hire a bike and we will get the ball rolling for you and put you in touch with the right people where possible. You can also bring your own seat and/or pedals to give you that little bit of ‘home comfort’.

Why book with us?

We only run approximately 10 tours per year. This makes every tour as special to us as it is to you because we are not repeating the same rides over and over again week-in week-out. Every tour is meticulously planned and we are just as excited to be there as you – there is no bulk production-line here! On most occasions the owner-operators of the business will be on tour with you looking after everyone on the ride.  The safety and confidence that comes with that is one of many great reasons to book your cycling holiday with us.
AllTrails is a proud Australian owned company with a great reputation in the bicycle tour industry. We have earned that reputation through hard work and dedication and we sincerely care about every person on every tour. Our large community of loyal AllTrails riders that keep coming back year after year are testament to the high standard of tours that we provide. We consider ourselves the best in the business and we always make sure that our tours represent great value at a fair price.
