Now that we are back from overseas and I have a more regular training base, I have a measured distance of 30km from our home in Port Melbourne to Bay St Sandringham and return, along Beach Road in Melbourne. I did that run on Saturday morning, leaving at 6am.
I thought I may get passed along the way by some of the AllTrails community so I had my orange AllTrails cycling jersey on and waited for a few ‘g’days’ as cyclists wizzed past.
Sure enough it wasn’t too long before I got a yell from Kerryn Harvey and friends as they cycled Beach Road on the tandem preparing for Around the Bay in a Day, then their massive journey from Perth to Adelaide raising money for their START foundation (http://www.startfoundation.org.au/). Kerryn contracted a life-threatening flesh-eating bacteria as a result of a seemingly minor cycling accident. Radical surgery was required and a right forequarter amputation (arm & shoulder) was performed. It was great to see Kerryn out there on the bike again – a truly amazing woman. My run was satisfying with a time of 3 hrs 40 mins with a few drink and snack stops. A hot bath and some food revitalised my body, ready for another day.
Keep an eye out for me next weekend if you’re on the Beach Road circuit!
