Day 13. After a bit of a sleep in this morning we headed off on our rest day activity which was a canal cruise and walking food tour of Amsterdam. It was interesting cruising past all the houseboats that quite a few people live on. We even saw a floating playground on a barge. Our Dutch tour leader Marten has a brother who lives on one of these boats so we all gave him a wave as we cruised by. Once we got off the boat the food tour started and we sampled some herring, some of the best satay I’ve ever had (the Indonesian influence from the days of trade), absolutely the best Dutch apple pie ever from a cafe that’s been in the same family for over 50 years and washed it all down with a beer. The afternoon and evening were free for exploration of this lovely city. As usual, the local laundromat was a popular hangout and everyone got out and walked the old areas of town. It was good to give the backside a day of rest off the bike before we head out tomorrow for the first ride day of Stage 2.
