Bike Shop Boom
While the cycle tour industry is being hit pretty hard during Coronavirus, it is great to see and hear that bike shops are booming. Many bike shops have reportedly been experiencing sales figures doubling or climbing even higher as people turn to cycling during these tough lock-down days for exercise.
Some people are dusting off the old bike sitting in the back of the garage and taking it to the shop to get it tuned up, some are upgrading bikes and some are getting a new bike after not cycling for many years.
More people are commuting to work to avoid public transport, more families are spending time together cycling on bike paths and around their neighbourhoods and some are using cycling as an intense training session in lieu of gym workouts.
This has given cycling advocate organisations such as Bicycle Network an increased voice as it pushed governments and councils to provide improved infrastructure for cyclists as they take to the street in greater numbers.
As the COVID19 restrictions ease in the coming months (hopefully sooner rather than later!) we hope that the increased interest in cycling in the community continues and we still see lots of families, commuters and cyclists of all shapes, sizes and speeds as a permanent fixture in our towns and cities across Australia.
We look forward to cycle touring in Australia again soon!
